1080 recetas
de cocina.
Editorial redesign of Simone Ortega's canonical Spanish home-cooking book — a title that has lived in Spanish kitchens for half a century.

Simone Ortega's 1080 recetas de cocina is an iconic Spanish cookbook. First published by Alianza Editorial in 1972 and reissued in dozens of editions since, it has been a staple in Spanish kitchens for half a century.
This is a project I developed entirely on my own as my master's coursework at ESDESIGN Barcelona — not a commission from the publisher. It set out to honour what readers remember without preserving what has aged. The brief I set myself: a new edition that reads like a new edition, without betraying the lineage of every one before it.
The direction is a Spanish azulejo read as cover ornament — tile motifs lifted from eighteenth-century ceramic libraries, redrawn with the hand of a modern restraint. Deep navy, warm cream, a terracotta edge that returns inside at the chapter openings.

A new edition that doesn't betray the old ones.— The brief, set for the project
Fourteen chapters. One ornamental vocabulary carried from the cover to each opening page, with the colour rotating by category — cream grounds for everyday, terracotta for pastry, deep navy for the preserves. Dot leaders on the recipe lists so the book can be read as a table of contents and as an index at once.
The book is designed to be given, not sold. It is still, half a century later, the first cookbook a Spanish daughter will own.
